  1. What mowing height helps grass survive summer heat?

    Set your mower to around 3.5–4 inches for tall fescue. Taller grass shades the soil, conserves moisture, and suppresses weeds. In Great Falls and Arlington, that little height adjustment makes a huge difference through July and August.

  2. How can I tell drought dormancy from heat kill on tall fescue in July?

    Drought dormancy turns grass straw-colored but leaves crowns alive — tug gently, and it won’t pull up. Dead turf from heat stress breaks off easily at the base. Dormant lawns usually green up after consistent rain.

  3. How can I tell if tree roots are stealing water and nutrients from grass?

    If the grass around your tree browns before the rest of your lawn, it’s likely the roots are competing for water. Shallow-rooted trees like maples are notorious for it. Extending the mulch bed or adjusting irrigation usually solves the problem.

  4. Is aerating in early summer safe for cool-season lawns?

    Not really, it’s best done in fall or early spring. Summer aeration can dry out roots too quickly. Wait until temperatures drop back into the 70s before aerating.

  5. Could grubs or soil insects be the hidden cause of scattered dead spots?

    It’s possible. If your turf lifts like a loose carpet or you see skunks or raccoons digging, grubs might be the culprit. You can check by peeling up a small section and looking for white grubs near the roots. If you find more than five per square foot, treatment is usually needed.
